Urban Village: Pocket Living

Working hard to get middle earning Londoners – or city makers – onto the property ladder, Pocket Living is making the dream of owning a home in London a reality. By marketing properties below the average market price, the scheme allows first time buyers already living in the borough to buy affordable homes. Much like Poppy and her husband Jonny who bought their first place on Wynne Road with the support of Pocket Living’s initiative…

What was it that attracted you to Pocket Living? How did their scheme help you?

After actively looking for a couple of years before finding this flat, this was a good opportunity for us to buy our first home. We’d been renting in Lambeth and loved the area, so we were really happy to have our application accepted for this development.

Did you fall in love with the property as soon as you saw it?

It was brand new, clean and private. Plus, small and perfectly formed – the ideal place to make our own. We used pops of colour to contrast with the minimal white interior, which has worked well and added a touch of character. I remember parking on the street and seeing the building work come together over those months – we couldn’t wait to move in.

When did you know it was your dream home?

My husband and I got engaged in this flat and I knew it would be our perfect first home together. There is a lovely sense of community in the block and we have got to know our neighbours over the years. We have loved our time here.

What’s the thing you love most about your home?

The big windows and being on the top floor, because it gives a beautiful lightness to the space. It is easy to forget we’re in Brixton watching the sun set over the buildings in the evenings.

What do you love the most about the area and would you recommend it to other people looking to buy?

There are two tube stations nearby, plus a bus stop and bike station at the end of the road. Being well connected is important, as we’re always travelling around London for work. There are so many great food spots in Brixton too, which is a short walk away. Also, Brockwell Park is perfect for sunny days at The Lido and we love Herne Hill Market on a Sunday.

Without Pocket Living, would it have taken you longer to buy somewhere?

Definitely. The scheme enabled us to buy a newly-built flat in an area where everything in comparison was unaffordable for us at the time.

How happy were you with their help?

They were very helpful guiding us through the purchase process and on hand whenever we had any questions.
