Urban Village: local heroes continued!

We are so proud of our local community and the heroes in our area just keep growing and growing. Here we share even more of the businesses that are doing their bit to help out…

Since March 2020, it’s safe to say that it’s been pretty difficult for the businesses surrounding Urban Village HQ. But even with the closures, fewer customers and financial difficulties, these small companies have refused to give up. Determined to continue providing the local community with delicious food, a place to talk openly and a positive vibe, these local heroes never fail to amaze the team at Urban Village…

Caffe Pronto

Located in close proximity to King’s College Hospital, Caffe Pronto has stayed open for takeaways over the entire lockdown period, ensuring that they could still serve the NHS staff. ‘With so many people still needing food at the local hospital, we were keen to continue providing it for them,’ the owner Kamel told us. ‘We are only across the road, so we wanted to feed them!’

Serving breakfast, American pancakes, burgers and a variety of snacks, we have no doubt that the NHS staff couldn’t have been happier with Kamel’s decision. And with the option to deliver their delicious meals to our doorstops via UberEATS, there’s even less reason to miss out on Caffe Pronto’s amazing menu.

Nandine

A family business, Kurdish restaurant Nandine belongs to the Baban family and is led by the matriarch, Pary. Seating just three dozen, Pary’s baklava is the main talking point of the restaurant, but with offerings of a seven spice chicken shish, the lula kebab, a set of mezze dips , salty capers and spice-dusted, quilted flatbreads, it really is impossible to choose our favourite dish.

Describing themselves as the ‘coffee shop from the Middle East’, Pary and her family have also recently been working alongside the Copleston Centre and The London Community Foundation to provide #RealMeals for older and vulnerable people in the community, which is just amazing to see.

The Phoenix

Set in the heart of Denmark Hill, you’ll find this gorgeous pub with incredible quirky charm, amazing food and a lovely, homely atmosphere. Now open for Al Fresco drinks and dining, The Phoenix is housed in a rescued station building and still carries a plaque marked ‘Evening Standard Pub of the Year 1993’!

Not only is this an amazing pub to visit, but the team there have also been working hard throughout lockdown to support the local community. ‘Even before COVID-19, we offered a 20% discount to NHS staff,’ they told us, ‘and now we have re-opened, we don’t have any plans to stop!’

So great to hear, particularly with King’s College Hospital being so close by.
