The kitchen is easily the most valuable room in the home. Here are the hot trends for 2019.
1. Kitchen islands
These show no sign of falling out of fashion. A sociable and practical space, they provide added storage as well as a casual dining space. All you need to add are some smart stools or tall brass seats. Alternatively consider a peninsula, which is attached to one wall and work especially well in single wall or L-shaped layouts.
2. A dark colour scheme
Searches for black and dark colours were up 93 per cent in the last six months. Navy and dark green especially are proving popular.
3. Bespoke pantries and larders
Our kitchens need to work harder for us, but not at the expense of sucking up space. Step in the customised pantry or larder - a bespoke deep cupboard with moveable shelving, deep drawers, built in spice racks and plenty of space so all your cooking essentials are easy to access.
4. Storage, storage and more storage
We all love a kitchen appliance, but are less keen to have everything visible. The solution? Tall, floor-to-ceiling storage units, overhead cabinets and concealed built-in storage wherever space allows.
5. Feature splash backs
A bit of tile or glass as a splashback? That’s so 2018. This year’s kitchen designers are using tall splash backs almost in the way that feature painted walls or wallpapers are used. A single slab, of marble, for example running up the wall, instead of independent tiles looks stunning and is easier to clean. Win win.
6. Smart taps
Instant boiling water, sparkling or filtered? There’s a tap for that.
7. Concealed extractors
A bulky overhead extractor fan can ruin the look of a streamlined kitchen, but there are designs that conceal the extractor all together into the ceiling space so the line of view isn’t broken. Similarly concealed vents which pull back into the wall give a more seamless look.
8. Wood
Flooring, cabinets, furniture, drawer-pulls, in as raw, natural and reclaimed state as possible.
9. Tech
Digital wizardry is everywhere, even more so in our kitchens. Our favourite of 2019? The Wifi-enabled espresso machine which can brew up your favourite coffee before you’re even out of bed.
10. Industrial chic countertops
Concrete countertops or a twist on these, incorporating heavily patinated concrete tops with swirls and markings that makes every piece look unique.
11. Mix up your metals
Brass was the most popular last year. In 2019 a combination of copper, pewter and brass is finding a way into our kitchens.
