South London Area Guide: Waterloo

Welcome to Urban Village Homes’ area guide to Waterloo, the iconic transport hub that serves as the city’s beating heart, with over a quarter of a million commuters from London and beyond passing through it every single day. But don’t be fooled by the commuter footprint, as there is more to this area than just a bustling station - its a vibrant, cosmopolitan utopia of bars, cafes, markets and quirky businesses that offers its residents the perfect blend of city life and local colour.

What’s more, Waterloo also boasts close proximity to South Bank, a two-mile stretch below the Thames that plays host to some of London’s top cultural institutions and attractions. And, if that isn’t enough to pique your interest, then the rest of London is just a train ride away!

Hidden Gems and Spaces to Explore

Twice the Siren - https://www.twicethesiren.co.uk/

Looking for a unique, hand-crafted gift for that special someone? Twice the Siren is an independent jeweler, clothes and gift shop in Lower Marsh that has been delighting local residents since it first opened its doors in 1992.

The term ‘hidden gem’ couldn’t be more relevant, as they specialise in the use of rare and unusual stones to create distinctive pieces you won’t find anywhere else – all designed by the owner, Caroline Scott, and brought to life by responsibly managed artisan workshops in India.

The last thing you would expect to find in a city center is a farm, but that is precisely where you will find the aptly named ‘Oasis Farm’. What was once a strip of barren wasteland has been completely transformed into a flourishing community resource and natural haven.

Working in partnership with Oasis Hub Waterloo and Jamie’s Farm, this urban space has dedicated itself to the pursuit of self-care, and provides regular therapeutic and educational activities for children, as well as a wide range of workshops and seasonal events throughout the year. If you want to get involved, they are always looking for new volunteers!

Waterloo Millennium Green - https://www.bost.org.uk/waterloo-millenium-green

What was once a concrete car park has been completely transformed into a beautiful, green space that provides a moment of calm for those seeking to escape the urban bustle.

Wildflowers, lush grass, sculptures and a woodland trail are among the highlights of this pocket sanctuary, that owes its existence to local residents who needed somewhere to enjoy the outdoors. Today, it’s under new management, but the Bankside Open Spaces Trust has worked closely with the community to maintain both its beauty and purpose.

The Vaults - https://www.thevaults.london/

Tucked away inside the old railway passage of Waterloo’s Leake Street, surrounded by ever–changing walls of breathtaking graffiti art, you'll find The Vaults – a huge arts venue hidden behind an unassuming door.

Expect ambitious immersive shows, dining theatre experiences, and a plethora of jazz nights and music gigs all throughout the year. The Vault Festival takes place between February and March, with hundreds of new shows filling this ramshackle collection of theatre spaces and bars, including autobiographical solo shows, interactive adventures and installations, new plays, themed parties, all accompanied by hordes of excited theatregoers settling into the venue's many whimsically decorated bar spaces.

Good Times and Good Food

Skylon Restaurant & Bar - https://www.skylon-restaurant.co.uk/

Enter through the Royal Festival Hall foyer, take the lift to the third floor, then turn left and you’ve arrived at the bright and welcoming Skylon Bar – a destination drinking venue offering fabulous views of the Thames and London skyline, while you sit back and sip some of the tastiest cocktails in the city - we are particularly fond of the signature Skylon with its muddled grapes and ginger, Ciroc vodka, Manzana Verde, lime and apple juice.

Following the huge success of their Tooting location, the Unwined team have opened their second site in Waterloo and, upon entering, you’ll be greeted by that same chilled-out atmosphere and quirky aesthetics.

With such a delectable selection of unique wines from around the world, it may seem intimidating, but you don’t need to be a seasoned sommelier to enjoy their wide selection, as friendly, knowledgeable staff will suggest the perfect wine for the moment – either to drink in or take away.

Cubana - https://www.cubana.co.uk/location/waterloo/

A lively Cuban bar and restaurant that is a shining beacon to foodies and fun-lovers alike. Enjoy Cuban cuisine classics and masterfully mixed cocktails, in a cosy space cloaked in vibrant colours and adorned with vintage posters and Cuban ephemera.

Their legendary happy hour runs from 4pm to 7pm, which can be ordered inside, or from their street bar that sprawls out in front of the building’s iconic mural and facade. For those seeking something more private, you can enjoy your drinks on the outside terrace that overlooks The Old Vic – but be prepared for the tables and chairs to be pushed back in the later hours for dancers vibing to the live salsa bands.

Local Events and Activities

Located under Waterloo Bridge is the iconic Southbank Centre Book Market. First opened in 1983, the market was the brainchild of Leslie Hardcastle, who at the time controlled the BFI.

Hundreds of second-hand books adorn this permanent outdoor space, which brings light and life to the darkness beneath Waterloo Bridge – and don't worry, the bridge provides enough shelter that the market can stay open no matter the weather. So, if you’re craving a new read, or simple wish to mingle with a literary crowd by the water’s edge, this market is a must.

Imperial War Museum - https://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-london

Following its six-year-long £30 million refit, the Imperial War Museum (IWM) has been redesigned to present a well-rounded picture of war

In addition to thousands of pieces of military hardware and wartime artifacts, newer exhibits explore the human side of conflict, from the daily lives of soldiers in WWI and WWII to the impact war has had on mental health. The Museum’s third floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year, while the fifth floor Lord Ashcroft galleries house the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses alongside accounts of the individuals who earned them.

BFI IMAX - https://bfi.org.uk/bfi-imax

The BFI IMAX stands proudly as the UK’s biggest cinema screen, measuring a whopping 540 square meters! The building itself sits just outside Waterloo Station, surrounded by a labyrinth of underground tunnels than filmgoers will need to brave to reach the treasures within – which are certainly well worth it.

If you’re a fan of the cinematic experience, it doesn't get any better than this – a massive screen, awesome surround sound, and a seating arrangement that will keep your view clear of even the tallest person’s head!

The Connected Heart of London

While Waterloo may have lost its crown as the busiest station in the UK, following the opening of the Elizabeth Line, it has by no means lost its relevance as a central transport hub that can quickly connect you to the rest of London and beyond.

The station falls within London’s Zone 1, and connects to various train lines including South Western Railway for long-distance travel, as well as the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Waterloo & City underground lines for inner-city journeys. In addition, a large number of bus routes operate from Waterloo, so when it comes to planning your journey, you really will be spoiled for choice.
