Autumn/Winter interior design trends

After what felt like an eternity, the summer sun is finally dimming in the sky, basking the streets of SE5 in an autumnal glow.

Naturally, as we start to cool after one of the hottest summers on record, we’re set to spend more time inside our homes. Surely it’s time to wrap ourselves in a sea of oranges and browns (and some metallic accents for good measure) - but as Pantone’s Colour of the Year suggests - 2022 is anything but predictable.

Did someone call for interior design trends?

Pretty in Pink

Pinks have been a staple in interior trends for years - even we love it! But as we start to shut ourselves away in our homes, the vivid pinks of the summer are being replaced with soft pastel hues.

Deeply associated with calm and softness, it’s seen as the perfect winter colour to help combat the sense of sadness many feel when this time of year comes around.

But for some, one wall isn't enough. They are putting mindfulness first by placing this colour at the heart of their home. Interior designers are refitting or painting their kitchen cabinets this beautiful shade to bring their homes in line with the art-deco trend sweeping homes.

If you’re looking to sell your property, soft pink is also considered one of the ‘new neutrals’ - a colour that has personality but doesn’t dominate when staging your home.

Mirror mirror

It’s the middle of December. There’s not a lot of natural light. So create it. Through pure trickery, mirrors extend rooms and create points for light to bounce; it’s no wonder they’re been a popular choice for the upcoming darker months.

You don’t have to free up wall space to bring the opulent brilliance of statement mirrors, nor do you need to invest in something ostentatious in order to complete the look.

Mirrored surfaces create the same effect. Tables, sideboards, cupboard doors - all bring the sharp lines associated with the luxe look. Not a fan of the edge? Surround them with rugs and furnishings to create the illusion of softness.

Mirrors are excellent for making homes appear larger and brighter, particularly in homes that already suffer from a lack of light, such as basement apartments or shaded townhouses.

Let nature in

As we live in the heart of an urban metropolis, many of us crave to be surrounded by greenery. Embracing nature feels like a summertime pursuit, but the aesthetics of the great outdoors is a trend many are bringing into their homes in autumn and winter 2022.

From natural, exposed woods to velvet fabrics in deep hues, taking inspiration from nature is the easiest way to create warmth. Plus, this is a trend everyone can get behind as it complements existing decor.

When following this trend during autumn, green is the new orange, so don't be afraid to bring in all shades of this sumptuous colour. One quick and easy way to achieve this without redecorating is by adding some house plants.

Dark corners

How often do you hear people complaining about the dark? This winter, we’re embracing it. Diving into the realms of dark academia, trends forecast cosy corners for contemplation are on the agenda for living rooms, offices, and reading nooks alike.

Deep hues of green, mustard tones, and splashes of gold, copper, and even charcoal will foster a cosy environment for you to shut out the cold. If you’re tempted to include ochre and traditional autumnal tones, then let temptation guide you - this is the perfect trend to fulfil your ideal interior design dreams for the season.

But no matter how you decide to style up this trend, warm lighting is a must. If you’re going for the true Dark Academia aesthetic, then candles (real or battery operated) will be your accessory of choice on all surfaces. Just make sure that if you’re staging your home to sell this winter, you make sure your home is bright and warmly lit for viewings on those darker evenings: it’s a must for showcasing your space to its full potential.

Statement 70s

You read that right. The bold patterns and the love of all things brown from the 70s are making a return - but with a modern twist. As for homeowners who didn't experience the boom the first time, it’s still all about that focal point.

Designers are combining pattern-heavy walls with neutral furniture; creating statement pieces in orange hues to bring the room to life; and some are getting creative with tiles to bring the symmetry 70s decor was known for.

Of course, it all has to be in a blaze of colour for that added personality. Many will have fond memories of the brown glass ashtray. You know the one we mean.

Trust in Pantone

It’s undisputed that when Pantone decides a colour of the year, they lay the groundwork for design trends for the year to come. And 2022 is no exception. Their choice ‘Very Peri’ places purple and blue hues at the top of every designer's list - even traditionally spring shades like lavender are seizing the moment.

What’s their secret to their longevity? They are cool toned.

Heading into winter, a splash of lilac or ice blue will complement the seasonal elements. It’s no surprise that it has captured the hearts of residents in SE5 - come the warmer months, we are surrounded by beautiful Wisteria blooms.

In comparison to last year's colours, Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray, we predict the joyfulness imbued within the blues and purples will brighten homes for years to come.

Naturally, it all comes down to your personal preference and taste - and trends can do wonders for selling you home to prospective buyers if it is time to say goodbye. Urban Village has years of experience selling homes of all kinds across SE5. Get in contact with our team today to learn more.
